Passivation

Stainless Steel – Why Passivate?

Passivation is the term for a process that removes unwanted iron and iron compounds from stainless steel surfaces. While stainless steel untreated is resistant in mild corrosive environments corrosion does occur. During processing a transparent protective film is formed to protect the stainless from oxidation.

Stainless Steel Passivating Benefits:

  • Cleaner surface
  • Eliminate iron contamination from machining or forming
  • Increased corrosion resistance
  • No rust discoloration
  • Avoids tarnishing
  • Creation of a protective thin transparent film
